I recently returned to and rediscovered the poetry of Whitman. He wrote during some turbulent and very troubled times when many felt that America had lost its way. This was a time when the consciousness of a people had to get to grips with what democracy meant and who was to be equal and free. But instead of lecturing, preaching or even chastising, Whitman encouraged people through his poetry to celebrate life – and indeed see the everyday miracles in their lives.
